Software development of Metric Applications in Geomatic Environments

Metric data extracted from images (static and video, in different spectra: visible; NIR or thermal, etc.) are very useful in cutting-edge applications in the field of cultural heritage and in the areas of engineering and related ones. With the increasing computing power of desktop computers in recent years, there are emerging softwares that include different measurement tasks. However, these packages usually consist of generalized tools, so in many cases it is difficult to adapt them to the specific needs of projects.

Our group developes software with metric-related capacities tailored to the specific needs of customers or users, as well as for new competitive projects that are not tied to existing tools.

Close Range Photogrammetry and Laser Scanning

The measurement and reconstruction of 3D objects is essential in many fields of knowledge, from the industrial to extract profiles, sections and volumes of industrial parts, going through the building to find out movements of materials or infrastructure scaled cartographies, including the world of cultural heritage conservation and restoration, and particularly at heritage documentation of sites or architectural monuments, or archaeological prospecting and excavations and museum artifacts.

Our group makes use of high-end procedures that seek to automate most of the tasks of spatial measuring, without the need for physical contact by means of multisensorial photographic images and/or three-dimensional whiskbroom laser scanning technology. The advantages associated with the techniques of close range photogrammetry are many, stressing the accuracy that is achieved in the generation of digital surface models, reducing processing times, as well as the ability of texturing the photographic images onto the digital models in 2D, for generating 2D digital orthophotos or orthoimages, and in 3D, for generating photorealistic movies and animations.

Multispectral Analysis on Buildings and Cultural Heritage

In most buildings considered as architectural monuments, it has been used stone, wood, brick and mortar as construction materials. The weather affects in an inexorable way causing aging, alteration and degradation of the nature of the materials, and therefore their aesthetic appearance. The definition, the inventory and mapping of materials and alterations are essential in suggesting the different stages to be addressed in the works of conservation and restoration.

Our group works on the analysis of visible, IR or thermal imagery makes it possible the material classification, identification of damaged areas, humidity, leaks and heat losses, the characterization of hidden architectural features, peel off, etc. This technique allows an analysis of the pathologies in a non-intrusive way, as the monument in question remains unchanged, preserving in this way its conservation status.

Development of Augmented Reality Applications

Augmented Reality (AR) is a novel technology that emerges from the Virtual Reality (VR). The objective of VR is the visualization of sufficient polygons to make the environment credible, in AR the world already exists, and it is only necessary to add a small amount of information. Thus, the AR challenge is to produce independent systems, portable, and capable of recording and/or precisely locate the virtual environment in the real environment, so that the user experiments a higher degree of immersion and presence. As a novel technology, there is currently no widespread distribution of applications of this kind.

In this sense, the group has experienced staff in RA application development with capabilities for: the choice and integration of physical systems (sensors, displays, etc.); application development of mobile/static, local/global and/or multiuser/single user systems; optimum integration of multimodal systems of the type graphical, sonic and haptic; etc.

Portable multi-camera photogrammetric system for terrestrial applications

The portable photogrammetric system presented allows installation and assembly of multiple sensors (photogrammetric, photographic, multispectral, hyperspectral, video, laser, radar, etc.) with parallel and / or converging axis under a rigid transportable support. The support or multi-camera platform also has Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) positioning and Inertial Navigation System (INS) in order to achieve direct georeferencing (determination of the three positional and spatial orientation parameters) of the device in space. The positioning and navigation equipment are synchronized with a laptop that collects and records the signals. The laptop can also shoot and capture digital images, although this requirement may be optional.
